Art museums play an increasingly vital role in cities across the globe from the U.S. and Europe, to Latin America and recently China and the Middle East. This course will examine museums from a multiplicity of perspectives, exploring the important trends emerging in the field and delving into the unique challenges they face in the 21st century. Topics include globalization, restitution claims, new private-collector museums, the latest starchitect buildings, the entertainment culture, the ethics of deaccessioning, the use of digital technology and more. The course will also include exclusive interviews with leading figures in the field including museum directors, architects and collectors.
