Sotheby’s Summer Institute invites high schoolers who are curious and passionate about the arts to immerse themselves in one of the most vibrant art capitals in the world, New York City. We spoke to Lilith about her memorable summer experience.

Which Sotheby’s Summer Institute course(s) did you enrol on and why?

I enrolled on the Art Conservation / Art Appraisal course out of curiosity as I've been an artist apprentice for almost 3 year. My mom found a Sotheby's Institute of Art post on Facebook about the summer pre-college program and that's when with the support of my parents I gave it a try and loved it!

What was the most interesting thing you learned / experienced during your time in New York City?

The most exciting thing was going into the conservation lab in the Whitney Museum. It all felt real for the first time, not just studying and learning theory, but really experiencing it firsthand.

Describe your favorite day of the program. Where did you go, who did you meet with?

My favorite day of the program was after school when I went with my friends from conservation to explore New York City, specially Soho. We shared so many good memories together and have remained in contact, hopefully we will cross paths again in the future.

What was your day-to-day experience like?

My day-to-day experience was really fun! Sometimes I would workout before the program with a friend from my class or talk and have breakfast with my roomie in Starbucks, after that we went to class. Later on we would plan something for the evening with everyone, like going to eat, trying new experiences in the city or just chilling together while working in our projects. At night I would tell my roomie everything that happened that day and would share stories until we went to sleep.

How will you take these experiences from the program into your life moving forward?

My experience over the summer will always be motivational for me because this is just the beginning. At the same time, all the knowledge I learned will be helpful to have a more objective opinion when studying and thinking outside the box when solving a problem.

What are you considering as a profession once you graduate?

Now that I have finished the program, I want to study art conservation further and keep working in the art world.
