Sotheby’s Institute of Art is pleased to present Unrooted: Cultivating Resilience through Art, curated by Yijin Chen, Federica Jermann, and Helen Haoyi Yu.

Featuring works by Claudia Doring Baez, Leone Contini, Mar Figueroa, Paul Hughes, Noormah Jamal, Linling Lu, Miriam Medrez, In June Park, Karina Aguilera Skvirsky and Carina Wu, the exhibition aims to explore the concept of resilience through different lenses and with distinct sensibilities including humans’ intersectional connection to nature, history, culture, migration, and identity.

Unrooted: Cultivating Resilience through Art t features a diverse group of artists who employ a wide range of mediums including painting, drawing, collage, printmaking, textile art, cyanotype photography, ceramics, paper sculpture and video installation. This showcase of varied backgrounds and techniques amplifies the artists' common theme of using creativity to develop resilience when navigating in a world of growing chaos. Each artist lends their vision to specific difficulties, excavating personal and cultural reservoirs of adversity. While Paul Hughes paints the rough seas and skies of Ireland that confront him and his people along the Coasts of Kerry, Claudia Doring Baez illustrates the political debate of historic sites across the United States in light of the Black Lives Matter Movement. Mar Figueroa initiates conversations on personal immigrant journeys, heritage, and ancestral wisdom - and Leone Contini documents a dialog with immigrants working the lands in Italy. Whether it is through cultivating the land, relationships, ideas, education, or the arts, this group of artists all cultivate resilience.

The multifaceted nature of the show mirrors the complex, nuanced ways these artists respond to adversity and nurture strength through their practices. By presenting such a rich tapestry of perspectives and mediums, Unrooted underscores the universality of hardship and healing while celebrating the highly personal ways art aids in cultivating resilience.

We invite you to take a closer look at this captivating exploration of resilience through art.
