Digital Strategies in the Art World

This course introduces the use of AI, blockchain, and metaverse technologies to art businesses and museums for online sales and engagement.

With the global transition to online business during the COVID-19 pandemic, and continued innovations in fields such as AI, blockchain, and the metaverse, art businesses and museums alike are searching for ways to innovate and leverage these technologies to drive sales and engagement. This course explores how technology drives innovation in the contemporary art market, covering various topics such as digital art history, blockchain technology and NFTs, artificial intelligence, and the metaverse. Students will examine the impact of technology on the art world and how various players and institutions utilise it, such as artists, collectors, galleries, museums, art fairs, and auction houses.

Gigi Grussing has led digital and social media marketing for NYC-based companies in the food and beverage sector for the past nine years, prior to which she practiced law for ten years in San Francisco and the Silicon Valley. She earned certification by Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts in New York as a mediator for arts-related disputes and has worked as an in-office volunteer at VLA, reviewing artist applications for legal help.
