Wendy Philips is a Senior Director and has been head of Sotheby’s Tax & Heritage group in London since 2004. Sotheby’s Tax and Heritage service is responsible for working with clients and their professional advisers on the wide range of UK tax and valuation issues which arise through the acquisition, ownership and disposal of art, with a particular emphasis on the heritage taxation code. Wendy has been involved in many significant transactions including several major single owner sales, private treaty sales to UK institutions and offers in lieu of Inheritance Tax. She also represents clients before the Reviewing Committee for the Export of Works of Art. In addition to her work for Sotheby’s clients, she also regularly lectures, is a member of the Heritage Group of Lawyers, the Historic Houses Association Tax Committee and a founding Board Member of PAIAM – Professional Advisers to the International Art Market, established at the beginning of 2011.
Wendy read Classics at St Anne’s College, Oxford before qualifying a solicitor. Prior to joining Sotheby’s, she spent over ten years as a solicitor in private practice, specialising in the private client trusts and estates field.
