Nicholas Hunt spoke at Sotheby’s Institute of Art- Los Angeles on February 9, 2017.
Born and raised on the coast of Southern California, artist and collector Nicholas Hunt received his undergraduate degree from Pepperdine University and his Master’s in Art Business from Sotheby’s Institute of Art. He works with Heather James Gallery out of Palm Desert, CA, and shows with Creative Art Partners in Los Angeles.
Here is a note from Jonathan T.D. Neil, Director of Sotheby’s Institute of Art-Los Angeles about the Open Day, and on having Nick as a student:
"This open day is of particular importance to me personally. Prior to founding the Los Angeles campus, I taught in the Contemporary Art and Art Business programs at Sotheby's Institute of Art in New York, where I also initiated and oversaw the third-semester option there. Just a handful of students chose to pursue this third-semester-plus-Master's-Project option when it was first offered in 2011.
One of those students was Nicholas Hunt, who is graciously hosting our Open Day this week at his studio and home in Downtown Los Angeles. Ever interested in the LA art-scene, Nick presented a business plan for 'Rebel's Paradise', a gallery and exhibition space dedicated to southern California art, fashion, and design. I recall working closely with Nick on this project, and watching him expand its scope and rethink just what a gallery could be and what it could do.
Soon after he graduated, Nick opened a gallery in New York to put some of these ideas to the test. And eventually, he found his way back to Los Angeles, where he is making art of his own with a keen eye on the market and how his, and how contemporary art in general, must contend with it. Though all credit is due to Nick, I'm proud that Sotheby's Institute of Art, and I, can claim Nick as one of our own."
