Chicago native Kurt Swanson has been involved in theatre since his years as a musician for High School plays. His performance skill garnered statewide awards and earned him scholarships. He served in a variety of administrative positions with social service and arts organizations in Milwaukee and Chicago, including serving as a founding member of the “Second Tier” collaborative arts organization in Milwaukee, and as manager of Theatre X, an internationally touring ensemble theatre company which counted among its members the talented Willem Dafoe. In Chicago, he served as finance manager for Steppenwolf theatre during the time of its simultaneous mainstage, experimental and Broadway productions, often interacting with major stars and virtually every sector of professional theatre production. He has served as senior staff to major nonprofits in the Coachella Valley and Los Angeles, and served on the board of Syzygy Theatre Group. Swanson is Managing Director of SST Productions, a nonprofit theatrical production organization that has eight years of experience producing both original and historic plays in the US and the UK (he is a registered UK Arts Professional). He had full charge operations of a commercial theatre and rental performance space in Burbank. Since 2015, he has served as the General Manager for The Broad Stage in Santa Monica, with full responsibility for finance, operations, promotion, scheduling and programs in that well-respected, award winning regional stage, operating with a $10 million budget.
