Call and Response — On view April 18-23, 2018
Sotheby’s Institute of Art is pleased to present Call and Response, a solo exhibition of paintings by artist Kim Romero curated by Brett Katharine Porter, a MA Contemporary Art candidate.
Self-taught artist Kim Romero is an impressionistic, abstract painter whose natural attraction to the relationship between colors and textures is not surprising given her thirty years of experience in interior, food and garden design. Her paintings grow out of personal experience; tactile and painterly pieces that recall a feeling of intrigue and calm. Based in the historical seaside town of Southport, Connecticut, Romero draws inspiration and spiritual solace from the bodies of water along the East Coast. As a longtime boater, she embarks on frequent outings on Long Island Sound, and as a keen observer of her surroundings, she pays close attention to ways in which natural patterns and rhythms occur in each location of her journeys. The large scale, abstract, heavily textured, atmospheric Pink Sky is the result of the artist painting her impressions of “the coastal sunsets in her own backyard”. The artist explains: “When the sky spreads out with shades of pinks and oranges, reflections appear in the sky and water and I put paint to canvas and show the viewer my awareness and perception of the moment.”
Painted abroad, Sinatra IV was inspired by Lisbon’s steep, colorful, storied streets and palaces and the intensity of imagery and history of the old city. This compelled Romero to paint in a multidimensional red terra cotta color. Call and Response showcases works that most powerfully and most eloquently demonstrate the artist’s deeply personal responses to the natural world and her keen appreciation of it.
Over the last ten years, the artist has studied at The Silvermine Art Center in New Canaan CT, exhibiting several times in Westport and Greenwich, CT. She has also been an Exhibiting Member of the Rowayton Arts Center in Rowayton, CT. In March 2019, Romero will be the Solo Resident Artist at the Union League Club in New York City. She is currently represented by Southport Galleries in Southport, CT and Romanoff Elements of Westchester, NY, an art consultant and artist representative. She is a resident artist in both Bungalow, a lifestyle boutique in Westport, CT and in Nest Inspired Home in Rye, NY. kimromero.com
