Methods, Materials and Interventions of the Old Masters is a workshop led by Dr Chantal Brotherton-Ratcliffe.
If you have ever thought that a painting by one of the Old Masters looked stiff, dull or dowdy, the reason might lie in the very limited materials available to painters of earlier periods, or in the accidents that time and humans have wrought on their works. This session by Dr Chantal Brotherton-Ratcliffe is a demonstration of some of those intractable materials such as red lead and copper resinate, as well as some examples of damage and restoration.
