Where are you from? I am from Kazakhstan, but have lived in Milan, Italy since 2002.

Tell us about your background and what made you choose Sotheby’s Institute of Art – Online for your art world studies?
I took my Master’s degree in Fashion Management at SDA Bocconi business school in Milan in 2002. I have more than 18 years of experience in luxury shoes and leather goods accessories business. I am also very sensitive to the fine arts, antiques and beautiful objects in general. The art market and the luxury market have many things in common, but I wanted to better understand the mechanisms of art market and learn more about the business of art. Sotheby’s Institute of Art offers the unique opportunity to learn online and the courses provide you with knowledge based on practice and case studies.

What did you most enjoy about the Sotheby’s Institute of Art Online program?
I really enjoyed the professionalism of the faculty and the quality of interaction they had with every student. I also found the varied and interesting reading list very useful.

"In a very short time you gain significant knowledge and understanding of the art market and art business”.

How do you feel the skills and knowledge learned on the program have helped you in your career?
Well, I think a lot! In a very short time (6 weeks) you gain significant knowledge and understanding of the art market and art business. This background knowledge is helping to inform me and my friend, who also took the Online course, to develop a new project: an online art gallery to promote Kazakh artists. This gallery will show the nomadic culture to the world and will also promote international artists to Kazakh customers. I feel very excited and thrilled about this project.

What effect has this program had on your every day? What parts of your experience with the program have been the most meaningful?
Perhaps the main effect that the program had on my everyday is that I needed to actively monitor, read, and watch art market information so I could be as up-to-date as possible. For me, the most meaningful part was the “homework”: I went to Paris (FIAC fairs); I visited museums and looked at every artwork differently; I studied and researched more about every artist I was interested in.

How did you find fitting the Online program around your everyday life?
It was perfect! I could access my discussion board, and complete the essays at any time, anywhere - whether at home, in the office, in Milan or even Paris. The learning platform was also accessible on all my devices (phone, iPad, PC) which made it very convenient.

Age: 27

Occupation: Custom Frame Consultant and Freelance Illustrator

Where are you from? I am from Melbourne, Australia.

Tell us about your background and what made you choose Sotheby’s Institute of Art – Online for your art world studies?
I finished my honours in art history a few years ago. I worked in events but knew I wanted to end up working within the arts. I currently work for a bespoke framing company that provides services for some of the top Australian galleries. I wanted to do some further study as I was feeling a little lost in my career, but I was very busy and a little unsure about what I wanted to study.  I had a friend who worked at an auction house and she recommended that I undertook some study with Sotheby’s Institute, as she had just completed some herself.

What did you most enjoy about the Sotheby’s Institute of Art Online program?
I enjoyed the content. It was all so well selected and relevant. I not once discovered a reading or lecture that wasn't interesting and engaging. I also enjoyed how actively the tutor and class participated, the whole course felt very ‘live’.

How do you feel the skills and knowledge learnt on the program have helped you in your career?
The skills and knowledge I learnt during these programs gave me the confidence to actually apply for some volunteer positions within the auction industry. I now volunteer regularly for a few auction houses and absolutely love it. The content in these courses also gave me some unique insight into the art market, something I do not believe traditional style learning could. Having an industry expert teach the course was a crucial element for me.

What effect has this program had on your every day? What parts of your experience with the program have been the most meaningful?
These courses have helped me realise where I want to end up working within the art market. Before undertaking study with Sotheby’s Institute – Online Learning, I had a lack of direction about where my true interests lied. Since completing the courses I have discovered a passion for the auction industry. The experience was so meaningful because the content was honest and the people taking the course were genuinely passionate about the industry.

How did you find fitting the Online program around your everyday life?
I found it very easy to fit these programs into my everyday life. I work full time and have an active social life, but because the course content and platforms are so easy to access I had no problems completing course work whenever I had the time.

Course: Writing for the Art World

Age: 24

Occupation: Writer/Producer on Sotheby’s editorial team

Where are you from? Tampa, Florida

Tell us about your background and what made you choose Sotheby’s Institute of Art – Online for your art world studies?
I’ve always been passionate about art, but my journalistic background was mostly in fashion and luxury lifestyle. I was looking for an efficient way to gain experience in the art world, and this course felt like a great way to prepare myself for professional art writing. I remember being pleasantly surprised that Sotheby’s had an editorial-driven class, and I loved that this was an introductory course from a company firmly established in the art world.

What did you most enjoy about the Sotheby’s Institute of Art Online program?
I really enjoyed working on my final assignment. Throughout the class there were several opportunities to discuss readings and personal experiences at museums and institutions, but delving into a specific topic in a longer form, and especially having the chance to expand, draft and rewrite, was very valuable. There were many options for your final paper, but I chose to focus on a two-part project by Tatiana Trouvé that was on display in New York at the time. I studied both an outdoor installation and an indoor exhibition by the artist, and I also researched to learn more about her past work. I got to combine my prior interest in public sculpture, as well as public parks and green space, with a new approach by the artist, and it was fun to tie these findings together.

How do you feel the skills and knowledge learnt taking the course have helped you in your career?
I began the course right around the time I started working at Sotheby’s, so, of course, writing for Sotheby’s professionally while studying with SIA was quite complementary.

What effect has this program had on your every day? What parts of your experience with the program have been the most meaningful?
Every day, I write about art and luxury lifestyle topics for Sotheby’s, so reading and working with such similar topics for my online class gave me more exposure to these industries. Perhaps what I remember most about my experience was working with my instructor. She gave such thorough feedback and was very positive and thoughtful in doing so. I think when it comes to online classes, people fear that there will be a lack of individual attention. It seems so easy for the student, and even the teacher, to skimp. However, the opposite could be said about my instructor. She definitely paid attention to the development of my writing, and I feel she made a sincere effort to get to know me as a student – both my interests and my writing style – to draw as much out of me as possible in the short program.

How did you find fitting the Online course around your everyday life?
It was extremely easy to fit the program into my daily life. Lectures were generally recordings and readings that were accessible significantly ahead of any due dates. Also, my final assignment was a culmination of smaller assignments in the weeks prior, so this helped prevent procrastination and the feeling of being overwhelmed. I found the workload completely reasonable.

After 17 years in a corporate career, I decided to take the entrepreneurial route and founded an online art gallery dedicated to promoting upcoming artists.
