Short Course: Managing your creativity: Successful professional strategies for creative practitioners



Dates: August 2008

This course is aimed at employed and self-employed creative sector practitioners: visual artists; arts managers; curators, agents and dealers; photographers; graphic designers; advertising practitioners; actors + performers; theatre designers; dancers; writers; journalists; web designers; new media practitioners; film makers.

1. Creating new skills and new strategies: participant introductions; syllabus induction; the creative practitioner as one person business; mapping the territory; aims, goals and targets; practice development.
2. Understanding the business context for creative practice: the economic significance of creativity; historical background and the contemporary practitioner; definitions and current developments; key players; local, national and international context.
3. Who’s it for and how will they get it? The marketing of creative work.
4. Achieving successful PR and promotion: artist as brand; the need for communication; creating a communication strategy; evaluating promotional opportunities; getting editorial coverage.
5. Managing key business relationships: legal frameworks; forms of trading; contractual relationships; relating to your key advisers and co-workers.
6. But how will I get my creative work done?? Effective time management and personal organisation for creative people.
7. Making ideas into reality: identifying development opportunities; feasibility studies and the evaluation of ideas; writing proposals; making business presentations.
8. Managing your creativity: the business planning process; estimating and costing; writing a successful business plan.
9. Protecting your work: intellectual property and how ideas become profitable
10. Consolidation and growth: review and evaluation; the next steps; action plans and implementation.

Fee: SGD 3,200 (inclusive of GST). The fee covers all lectures and course materials.

We have decided to offer the opportunity for 2 people together to attend short courses and travel programmes at a reduced total cost. The fee for the second person will be reduced by 50%.
