Study Visit to India, 16 - 22 January, 2010 |

The first MA Art Business study visit in 2010 took us to Delhi where we explored the art market in detail. Under the excellent leadership of our local guide the participants – both students and Short Course participants – were able get a thorough insight into the Delhi art scene. The first gallery visit coincided with an opening show of Anju Dodiya’s works. Also present during the event was veteran painter S.H. Raza and students were able to talk and interact with both artists. An entire morning was spent at the National Museum of Modern Art where Professor Rajeev Lochan met us at his office for tea and then gave a personal tour of a current exhibition which examines how local artists in India reacted to Western art and painting techniques brought in by the British and other foreigners. In the afternoon curator Alka Pande gave a private talk at the India Habitat Centre where we also saw a show of photographer Rohit Chawla who was present. The Devi Art Foundation is the first private museum of its kind in India and a “must see” for every art lover. During our visit a show of contemporary Pakistani artists, mainly exhibiting installation art was on so we also had a glimpse of what is happening in that country artistically. Tunty Chauhan of Threshold Art Gallery gave us an insight of the gallery environment whilst the visit to Siddhartha Tagore’s Art Konsult was another highlight of the trip: Several young artists who exhibited their works were present to explain us their works in detail and talk about art education in India and their personal career experiences. Ashish Anand, the Director of Delhi Art Gallery, in the posh DLF Emporio shopping mall, explained the objectives of his company which deals mainly in modern Indian art (as opposed to contemporary art). Huge acquisitions in the past 10 years put this gallery on a special spot in the Indian art market and a lot of their staff is also working in art research. Next to visits to two other galleries which complemented the view participants gained about the local art market two special lectures were given by the India agent for Sotheby’s, the auction house, and by Archana Kharepant, a journalists who spoke about the widespread occurrence of forgeries in the Indian art market. Our last visit took us to the set-up of Krishen Khanna’s Retrospective, organized by SaffronArt, the leading internet-based auction house. We were able to speak to the artist and admire the huge collection of his very varied works which spans a period of over 60 years. There was sufficient time for own research and leisure activities (shopping....) and some students returned home with newly acquired art works. All participants were stunned by the lively and rich art scene in Delhi and the opportunities and potential this market will have in future. Gil Schneider Programme Director, MA in Art Business
