Study Trip to India, January 2008

As part of the institute’s MA in Art Business programme, the faculty organised an eye opening field trip in Jan/Feb 2008 to Delhi and Mumbai for its students, taking them on a colourful tour of national galleries and art spaces as well as exclusive private and corporate collections. The trip was structured to give students an interactive exploration into the ever-expansive South Asian art market; exploring issues of valuation and appreciation of South Asian art.

The MA, along with day course students, experienced first hand the mechanisms of the South Asian art market by gaining insights with gallery owners and private art collectors. The group was led by Ms Savita Apte, a well established Art Historian and lecturer who enabled the students to gain first hand insight into the dealings of the art world, with her years of experience in this field.

Part of the 5 day programme in India to galleries like Sakshi and Chemould, included a private tour of Anupam Poddar’s home, a leading collector in India as well as a tour of the Grand Hyatt’s private corporate collection housed in its premises in Mumbai.

Being exposed to Indian art in its native context, the students were able to fully appreciate not only the aesthetic value but the business aspect of the Indian art market, which is expanding exponentially and reframing itself for the 21st century.
