Contemporary Art, Singapore |

This is a specially designed programme for those who want to study contemporary art in-depth, with a view to working in commercial galleries or public museums, opening their own galleries or working as curators, dealers, consultants, writers or critics. The course emphasises the artwork itself and how we approach and interpret contemporary art. Analysis of paintings, sculpture, installations and conceptual works form a regular part of the curriculum, with tutor-accompanied visits to Singapore's museums and galleries. Week-long study trips to biennales, museums, collections and art fairs in China, Indonesia and New York are also key components in the first two semesters. In Semester 1 there is an intensive series of lectures by faculty and guest speakers on the development of art from the 1960s to the present. This will include examining key themes in art in Europe, the US as well as having a particular focus on Asia. For the major project in Semester 1, students will propose a hypothetical exhibition using a commercial or public gallery as a speculative model. Semester 2 will continue the study of contemporary art in the context of Post-colonialism and Globalisation. This is followed by seminar work focusing on the art network and the relationship of art to criticism, theory and literature. Throughout the course and the dissertation students can develop and discuss any ideas or issues they may have in one-on-one tutorials. Course Breakdown for 2008/09 SEMESTER 1
