Before You Start

To narrow your search, start thinking about location. A chic apartment in the city may be hard to resist, but you'll need a budget to match. More affordable housing can be found away from the city centre; these areas are well served by an extensive and affordable public bus and train system.

If you're looking at the suburbs - known locally as "public housing estates" or "the heartlands" - you'll find markets and eateries within easy reach. Many estates also boast a suburban mall, which usually houses retail outlets and restaurants, as well as movie theatres and a public library.
