Semester Course: Styles in Asian Art - Foundation Course in Asian Art

This foundation course in the art, architecture and decorative arts of India, China, Korea, Japan, South East Asia and the Islamic World surveys and examines both traditional art and the contemporary Asian art scene. The course develops knowledge of the various business models of the current Asian art market whose emergent business now plays a major role in the global art economy. How does the contemporary art scene reflect and refract the age-old wisdom and traditions inherent in the arts of these regions and how do collectors, gallerists and artists respond to these ideas for the 21st century? These are some of the issues covered in this unique programme through lectures and practical assignments.

By the end of the course, students will have a comprehensive grasp of the issues and contexts for a future career in the Asian art world. The course includes frequent visits to exhibitions and private viewing sessions in major museums in London. The programme culminates in a study visit to Europe.

The programme can be taken as a prelude to the MA in East Asian Art, but it is also an ideal introduction to the subject of Asian art in its own right.
