This programme is aimed at those who wish to study in-depth the place of the photograph in the art world and to pursue a career as a specialist in photographic imagery, theory and objects. The programme starts on 1 September 2008 and applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Scholarships/financial aid and bursaries are available to applicants. The primary focus of the MA course is the critical analysis of the ways in which historical and contemporary photography have established a significant presence in private collections, public museums, commercial galleries and publishing. In Semester One the history of photography from its invention in the 1830s through to current practice is studied in-depth with the emphasis upon aesthetic and historical analysis. In Semester Two, the institutional network and critical and theoretical approaches to photography provide the focus for the course. The course comprises three semesters. The first two are intensively taught. There is no formal tuition in the third semester when students complete their dissertations with regular tutorial supervision.
SEMESTER 1: 1 September - December, 2008
