The market for modern design has expanded rapidly over the last few years with both classic designers and emerging talents receiving ever-growing positive market attention. This course traces the evolution of Modern design from its roots in the mid nineteenth century up through the post-war period. Covering major moments in the modern aesthetic including Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and the International Style, this course explores the work of major figures such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Marcel Breuer, and Charles Eames among others. Through lectures, visits to museums and discussions with dealers and specialists, this course allows participants access to this exciting and dynamic New York market. This course is led by Jonathan Clancy, Director of the American Fine and Decorative Art Program at Sotheby’s Institute of Art, New York. Dr. Clancy’s writing on the Arts and Crafts movement in America has appeared in journals such as Style 1900, and Journal of Modern Craft. He has written and presented extensively on American Art Pottery and is currently directing a project cataloging the Fine Art collection of the Redwood Library in Newport, Rhode Island.
