Scholarships
To be considered for a merit-based Scholarship award, please complete a 1,500 – 2,000 word essay. The submission deadline for scholarship essays will be Friday, 30 April 2010.

Essay Titles:

1. The Sistine ceiling was controversially cleaned during the 1980s and 90s. Does the cleaning reveal that Michelangelo was really a Mannerist?

2. The Damien Hirst sale at Sotheby’s London in 2008 was very controversial in the art world. Does it mark a profound shift in the contemporary art market? Why?

3. Did Western art make a significant contribution to the court art of East Asia in the eighteenth century? Discuss.

4. Please critique your choice of the following: EITHER an exhibition OR a display in a museum or gallery OR a recent auction house sale OR a historic house. Your answer should demonstrate why you have made this choice and demonstrate a capacity for critical analysis (i.e. you should not simply describe the exhibition or museum or gallery or sale etc but analyse it and indicate strengths and weaknesses etc.)

Your essay should be typed in double-spaced, 11 point text, and e-mailed to us accompanied by a covering letter by 30 April 2010.

For further information on scholarships and financial assistance, and for entry onto all postgraduate programmes, please contact Venetia Hill-Perkins in London at v.hill-perkins@sothebysinstitute.com or Alissa Roeder in New York at a.roeder@sothebysinstitute.com.
