The Art of the Lens: Aesthetics & the Market

With photography continuing to have a growing presence in private and public collections, this course highlights major movements and key figures in 20th and 21st century practice. The course comprises four lectures on the aesthetics and history of the medium, from the work of Ansel Adams and Aaron Siskind, to Nan Goldin, Cindy Sherman, and Andreas Gursky, and two sessions on the market for photography.

The course is led by Elizabeth Marcus, associate director of Galerie St. Etienne in New York where she has worked for over 20 years. She is completing her Ph.D in Art History from the City University of New York and has written and lectured widely on the history of 20th century fashion photography, and the history of 20th century design.
