Overview

This hands-on course provides an immersive encounter with curatorial practice in today’s art world, with an emphasis on curating contemporary art. Students learn the skills needed to navigate this exciting field, from developing relationships with artists to writing exhibition proposals to installation planning and design. Classes include seminar-style discussions, trips to major New York institutions, and guest lectures by prominent art experts. The course discusses the history of curating and studies the work of innovators, as well as the impact of recent phenomena such as the emergence of the independent curator and the artist-curator, the proliferation of biennials and art fairs, and the growing significance of participatory and interactive art.

By the end of this course students will…

  • Expand their own ideas into a hypothetical exhibition plan.
  • Identify several key New York art institutions and analyze the differences in their curatorial approaches.
  • Discuss the role of the curator both historically and in relation to recent art and exhibit trends, evaluating the key qualities of a contemporary curator.

    Media Farzin, Faculty, Online Courses and Summer Study, New York

    Media Farzin is a New York-based art historian, curator and critic whose writings have appeared in Art in America, Art Agenda, Artforum, Afterimage, Bidoun, and Canvas, among others. She served as curatorial assistant for the Gilbert and Lila Silverman Fluxus Collection from 2006 to 2010 and examples of her curatorial work include “Turning Points” (Neiman Gallery, 2004), and “Fluxus Scores and Instructions” (Museum of Contemporary Art Roskilde, 2008). An ongoing collaborative project with artist Alessandro Balteo Yazbeck, on cultural diplomacy and its modernist artefacts, has been exhibited at numerous venues in the US and Europe. She has taught at the Museum of Modern Art and the City College of New York. Farzin holds an MA in Modern Art/Curatorial Studies from Columbia University and a BFA in Painting from Tehran University.

    Stamatina Gregory, Faculty, Summer Study, New York

    Stamatina Gregory
    is a New York-based curator and art historian, whose work focuses primarily on the interrelationship of contemporary art and politics. She is the co-curator of Bring Your Own Body: transgender between archives and aesthetics, which opened at the Cooper Union in 2015 and traveled. Other recent projects include a posthumous retrospective of the photographer Brian Weil for the ICA in Philadelphia and the Santa Monica Museum of Art, and an exhibiton of the work of Tavares Strachan for the inaugural pavilion of The Bahamas at the 55th Venice Biennale. She has taught at the University of Pennsylvania, The New School and Purchase College. From 2013-2017, she was the Associate Dean of the School of Art at the Cooper Union. Stamatina holds a BA in German from New York University and an M.Phil, Art History, The Graduate Center, CUNY.
