This is the opening course in our annual series of Art Law for Art World Professionals courses. The purpose is to provide an introduction to many of the key legal issues relating to the trade and ownership of art and it is followed in the autumn by a slightly more detailed look at certain legal issues. Lectures across the courses address important areas such as auction and private sales, due diligence, agency, taxation, copyright, artists’ agreements, Nazi looted art and international and cultural art law. The courses nevertheless are directed toward non-lawyers working in the art world or wishing to do so, as well as lawyers from other disciplines. Each course is independent of the other but can also complement each other.
