London Graduation Day 2008

Sotheby's Institute of Art - London held their graduation ceremony on Friday, 18 April 2008 at St George’s Church, Bloomsbury.

Dr Megan Aldrich, Academic Director, presented this year's graduands to Tony Godfrey, on behalf of the Senate of the University of Manchester.

This year we were delighted to welcome Giles Waterfield, art historian and independent curator and writer, who formally addressed our graduands at the ceremony. Giles is a member of Sotheby’s Institute of Art – London’s Advisory Board and also holds several other prestigious positions in the Arts. A short biography is given at the end of this page.

In his address, Giles Waterfield encouraged the graduates to continue their education and become true experts in their chosen field.

The ceremony finished with a champagne reception at the Institute, 30 Bedford Square.

Sotheby's Institute of Art London Graduation Day 2008 St George’s is the parish church of Bloomsbury, and is one of the grandest and most beautiful buildings in the area. The building was designed by the architect Nicholas Hawksmoor, and was completed in 1730.

Giles Waterfield
Giles Waterfield has worked as Head of Education at the Royal Pavilion, Art Gallery and Museums, Brighton, and as Director of Dulwich Picture Gallery, London, from 1979 to 1996. He was joint curator of the exhibition Art Treasures of England at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, in 1998, In Celebration: The Art of the Country House at the Tate Gallery, London, in 1998 and Below Stairs, National Portrait Galleries, London and Edinburgh, in 2003-4.

He is an authority on the history of museums and his publications include: Palaces of Art, Art for the People and Soane and Death, as well as three novels. As well as being a member of Sotheby’s Institute of Art – London’s Advisory Board, Giles is also a member of the Advisory Committee of the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, a Vice-President of NADFAS and Trustee of Charleston, Sussex.
