Gilda Williams, Lecturer, MA in Contemporary Art
Teaching and Research Profile

Art and film critic, London correspondent for Artforum.

Prior to joining the staff on the MA in Contemporary Art programme at Sotheby's Institute of Art in 2005, Gilda was Commissioning Editor for Contemporary Art at Phaidon Press, where she worked from 1994-2005.

There she managed Phaidon's contemporary art department, which included commissioning some 50+ books in the 'Contemporary Artists' series, working with major artists such as Louise Bourgeois, Jeff Wall, Jenny Holzer, Mike Kelley, Pipilotti Rist, Raymond Pettibon, Paul McCarthy, Maurizio Cattelan among many others.

Gilda conceived and commissioned Phaidon's well-known 'cream' series of 'biennials-in-a book' (cream, fresh cream, and cream3) which since 1998 regularly introduces 100 new artists selected by a team of 10 international curators. She also edited the Themes and Movements series of anthologies, among them Land and Environmental Art, The Artist's Body, Conceptual Art, Arte Povera, Minimalism.

Other publications she was involved with there include Vitamin P (for which she was also a contributor) on contemporary painting, Vitamin Ph on contemporary photography, the monograph Gordon Matta-Clark, The 20th Century Art Book, and many others.

During that time Gilda was a regular art reviewer for Art Monthly magazine (1996-2006) and film reviewer for Sight and Sound magazine (2000-ongoing). Exhibitions Gilda have curated include 'Strange Days: Contemporary British Photography' and 'London Orphan Asylum' (both 1997).

Prior to moving to London in 1994 she was Managing Editor at Flash Art International, where she worked 1989-1994. Given her long professional experience in all aspects of contemporary publishing - commissioning and writing for art magazines, exhibition catalogues, anthologies and monographs - she regularly consults the Arts Council of England on their contemporary art publishing programme.

Gilda is currently researching her doctoral dissertation titled 'Warhol's Women', on the women in Andy Warhol's work and life; some of her research is planned for publication in an article titled 'Holy Mother' in the Spring, 2007 issue of Tate etc. magazine.
