Tribute to a former Academic Director of Sotheby's Institute of Art - London

Vivien Flaxman, former Academic Director and Deputy Head of Sotheby's Institute of Art - London, 1994 - 2001, has died of cancer aged 64, in April, 2008.

We pay tribute to an outstanding individual who inspired a generation of students. Vivien led our Styles in Art Semester Course for many years and contributed to a number of other programmes, including the BA in Fine and Decorative Art. She also founded our unique and highly successful Master's Degree in Art Business and forged the validation link with the University of Manchester.

As former colleague and Director of the London Institute, 1991 - 2000, Anne Ceresole, in her memorial tribute said, "Hundreds of students will remember Vivien as a most inspirational teacher. For many, she played an important part in their lives. She was passionate, compassionate, eager to share, and witty."

In her honour, Sotheby’s Institute of Art – London is pleased to announce the creation of a new scholarship award, entitled The Flaxman Scholarship, and awarded to successful UK applicants of any of our Master of Art Degree programmes.

We will miss her greatly.
