Understanding Design, Part I: 1890-1960 |

Six-week evening course on the following Tuesday evenings:
The period between 1890 and 1960 witnessed unprecedented social,
technological and political upheaval. Led by Lis Darby, Programme Director
of MA in Contemporary Design, this course explores the ideologies that
defined the enduring styles of twentieth century furniture design, from the
decline of Victorian eclecticism to the beginning of the Space Age. The
sessions examine trends such as Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Modernism
whilst setting the leading practitioners and key examples of each movement
into historical context.
This course may be taken as a stand-alone design course or as a prelude to Understanding Design, Part II: 1960-2010.
