Teaching and Research Profile

Andrea Schlieker has been teaching on the MA course for Contemporary Art at Sotheby's Institute for the last ten years. As freelance curator of national and international exhibitions of contemporary art she teaches only on a one-day-a-week basis.

At Sotheby's Institute of Art Andrea gives specialist lectures on Curating, Art in the Public Realm, Muenster Sculpture Projects (1977-97); German Sculpture; as well as a number of contemporary artists ranging from Anthony Caro to Rachel Whiteread and Antony Gormley as part of the 'Artist in Focus' series.

After ten years as curator at public galleries like the ICA and the Serpentine, where she organised many solo and group shows of acclaimed and emerging artists and contributed to each catalogue, Andrea recently co-curated the British Art Show6 (50 artists, touring the UK for one year), and wrote a number of extensive texts for the accompanying catalogue (Hayward Publishing, 2005/06).

Other publications include the lead essay on Nathan Coley's new work for Bute, Scotland (2006), on Anne Katrine Dolven for her major solo show at the Kunsthalle in Bergen (2005), and on Simon Patterson's commission 'Time and Tide' in the City of London, which she also curated (RIBA, 2005).

In 2007 Andrea will be writing an essay on the work of Tonico Lemos Aud for his first US solo show.

As curator of the first Folkestone Sculpture Triennale with twenty-three new commissions by national and international artists (due to open in spring 2008), Andrea will also be writing the text for the accompanying catalogue.

Andrea is regularly invited to speak at international and national symposia, most recently (January 2007) at an international think-tank about public art in Brussels. She is on the Advisory Board for the Venice Biennale (2007), a long standing board member of New Contemporaries, member of the Art Commissioning Board of the Imperial War Museum, as well as jury member of the DAAD international artists scholarship fund in Berlin (1992 to present).
