In November 2009, The Pilsudski Institute of America hosted its Annual Award Gala under the patronage of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland, Bogdan Zdrojewski, at the Polish Consulate in New York. During the Awards Gala, Poland’s Ministry of Culture and National Heritage awarded Sonia Kwiatkowski and her mother Helena Kwiatkowski a Medal of Honor for the repatriation of a painting by Jan Wladyslaw Chelminski to the Museum of the Polish Army in Warsaw.
Starting in 2008, Sonia and her mother were in close contact with the Ministry over a painting, by Jan Wladyslaw Chelminski, that had gone missing from the Museum of the Polish Army in Warsaw during the world wars. That painting had managed to find itself into the Kwiatkowki art collection in New Jersey that Sonia’s late Father created. After publishing a hardcover catalog of their collection and gifting it to the Museum of the Polish Army, it was discovered that the missing Chelminski painting was in their collection. The repatriation efforts began soon after and as Sonia was in the midst of completing her MA at SIA she was able to use her Art Law experience to lead the process on her family’s behalf. Once resolved and the painting returned, the Rzeczpospolita (The Republic) one of Poland’s largest daily newspapers published an article on the repatriation and our efforts to “Do Cultural Good”.
