Understanding Chinese Contemporary Art: Key Issues and Concepts
Contemporary art in China has recently grown to be one of the most exciting cultural developments in Asia and now plays a major role in the international art world. This course offers an informative guide to contemporary Chinese art, surveying the trends and movements that have shaped the past twenty-five years and tracing how the market for Chinese art has also played a vital role in its development. Students will study the cultural background of contemporary Chinese art across a range of media such as painting, sculpture, video and installation.
The course will look at the work of the most significant Chinese artists - such as Cai Guoqiang, Huang Yongping, Zhang Xiaogang and Liu Xiaodong - and some of those just emerging amongst the younger generation. Students will also learn about the infrastructure of the new art world in China and its rapid development and expansion in the last ten years.
