Summer Study in New York
Legal Adventures & Misadventures in the Art World
Gain an overview of important legal issues and cases in art by exploring subjects such as copyright, fair use and the appropriation of images by artists (such as Shepard Fairey, Jeff Koons, and others). Students also examine moral rights of artists, freedom of speech, rights of privacy and publicity, issues related to authentication and appraisals, restitution by museums of cultural property, and recent case development concerning Nazi era art. Participants will have the opportunity to hear from art experts and attorneys in the museum, auction house, and gallery worlds. No legal background is required.

Faculty
The course is taught by Sotheby’s Institute of Art faculty member, Judith B. Prowda, who is an attorney, mediator and arbitrator focused on art law, copyright, entertainment and commercial law. A prominent member of the Bar, she is Chair of the Entertainment, Arts & Sports Law Section of the New York State Bar Association, Chair of the Section’s Committee on Fine Arts, and Co-Founder and Co-Chair of the Section’s Committee on Alternative Dispute Resolution. Her articles have appeared in numerous law reviews and journals and have garnered prestigious awards.
