New York Summer Study 2012: Frequently Asked Questions
Who is eligible to apply?
Enrollment is open to college students, professionals in the field, and career-changers who are interested in developing their knowledge of art and the international art market. Many of our MA students take Summer Study courses to experience Sotheby’s Institute of Art before making the longer commitment to the MA program. There are no prerequisites for admission. To be eligible, students must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
When do courses start and how long do they last?
The 2012 summer courses are offered in the following sessions in New York:
4-week Courses
June 4 – June 28
July 9 – August 2
2-week Courses
June 18 – June 29
July 16 - July 27
1-week Courses
June 25 – June 29
July 23 – July 27
Students may take up to two courses per session, if schedules allow, and if they register for one course in the morning and one in the afternoon.
What are the hours?
The 4-week classes meet either in the morning or afternoon at the following times:
Morning Classes: Monday - Thursday 10:00am – 12:30pm
Afternoon Classes: Monday - Thursday 3:00pm – 5:30pm
Fridays are set aside for field trips, Institute-wide events, and on-your-own activities in the city. See individual course page descriptions for specific times for each course.
The 2-week classes meet in the afternoon, Monday – Friday 3:00pm – 5:30pm
The 1-week classes meet all day, Monday – Friday 10:00am – 4:30pm
Where will the classes be held?
The classes will be held at Sotheby’s Institute of Art, 570 Lexington Avenue, New York, 6th floor, however, all classes incorporate site visits around the city to facilitate firsthand learning.

How much does it cost?
The tuition costs are:
4-week courses - $3,750 for one course and $6950 for two courses
2-week courses - $1,650 per course
1-week courses - $1,350 per course
There is also a one-time $50 registration fee payable at time of registration. Full payment is due upon registration.
What is included in the cost?
The cost covers all lectures, entrances to museums etc. and course materials. Please read the registration form carefully regarding the refund policy. Accommodation is not included in the cost.
Is an application required?
There is no formal application process for Summer Study in New York. Interested students can register directly online.
How do I register?
Easy, online registration is available from our website 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, or you can print out the registration form (downloadable as a pdf) and complete your registration by phone, mail or secure fax. Interested students should read the registration terms and conditions available on the website. Once registration information and payment is received, students should expect to receive an email confirmation within one week.
Can I gain academic credit for Summer Study?
Courses in New York are offered on a non-credit basis. Students who wish to take a course for credit should inquire about requirements from their home institution. It is advisable to seek approval prior to taking the course as accreditation is at the discretion of individual institutions. Note: Any student wishing to obtain credit from their home institution must notify the Institute before class starts to be eligible.
Are there written assignments or exams?
For students who have received approval to take the course for credit, there will be some mandatory field trips and research on Fridays, and there may be an exam or written assignment due at the end of the course.
How do I decide which course(s) to take?

Do students receive a Certificate of Completion?
Yes, all students will receive an official Sotheby’s Institute of Art Certificate of Completion. These will be handed out on the last day of the course.
How do I find accommodation?
Accommodation recommendations can be found on our website. See this link for more information. Accommodation is not included in the tuition costs.
Do students from outside the United States require a visa?
Sotheby’s Institute of Art recommends that you check with the U.S. Government’s official Visa website: http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/temp_1305.html
Most international students can complete our summer programs while visiting the U.S. on a tourist's visa.
Do students need to supply a language certificate such as TOEFL?
Students are not required to supply a language certificate but must be aware that the courses are conducted in English and a good working knowledge of the language is recommended.
