Evening Course in New York
Understanding Contemporary Art
Taking 1990 as a starting point, this course examines the important work of the last two decades, the diverse influences and motivations of contemporary artists and the themes that inspire them. Students consider how the work of this era relates to postmodernism or even modernism, what the relationship is between contemporary art and globalization, and how technology, politics, and history affect today’s contemporary art practice. Instead of designating labels and movements, the course explores the knowledge and awareness that contemporary art can offer and provides insight into what may come next.
