Evening Course in New York
Russian Art: Culture & Context
This course introduces students to the major artists and artistic movements in Russia, starting with the prestige of art in the European style during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It goes on to examine the Realist movement of the 1860s, the flourishing of a national style based on folk art traditions, and the impact of the 1917 revolution on the art world. By considering artistic developments in the context of a changing society, participants will gain new insights into Russian art, icons, painting, sculpture, decorative arts, and Fabergé objects.
